Nobody wants to work in a toxic environment, yet all too often we find ourselves stuck in one. If you’re worried that your current workplace might be a breeding ground for unhealthy behavior and attitude, here are some key signs of a toxic company to look out for.

How Do Toxic Companies Develop?

Toxic companies often develop over time as a result of bad management, poor communication, and inability to manage conflicts appropriately.

Poorly managed teams can quickly become demotivated, suffer from burnout, and create an atmosphere of fear or distrust. Managers may be unapproachable, unwilling to listen to suggestions or provide help when needed. They might also fail to reward hard work or punish bad behavior.

Unclear communication can also lead to confusion and resentment among employees, who may feel that their voices are not being heard. In extreme cases, this might even spiral into bullying or harassment.

Finally, toxic companies often struggle to handle conflicts constructively. Instead of resolving issues in a healthy manner, blame is often thrown around, leaving employees attacked and powerless.

Signs of a Toxic Company

Sign One: Consistently Unclear Expectations

Do you feel at all directionless? Do upper management’s goals and expectations remain obfuscated? This could be a sign of a toxic company because it shows that the company lacks clarity and communication.

What Can You Do?

As an employee, you’re able to create some clearer expectations in your role. While you won’t be able to change the entire organization, you can make sure to be as transparent and communicative with your team as possible.

Additionally, don’t hesitate to speak up and challenge the status quo if you feel uncomfortable or see any unhealthy behavior. By voicing your opinions and negotiating boundaries, you may be able to create a better environment for yourself and those around you.

Sign Two: Normalized Undermining Behavior

Toxic companies can be made up of colleagues who actively undermine each other, often with passive aggressive comments. This behavior can be difficult to pinpoint because it’s so normalized in the workplace, but if you start to feel like your efforts are dismissed or undermined, it could be a sign of a toxic company culture.
