Navigating a job interview is often a nerve-wracking experience. The questions come at you in rapid fire, and it can be difficult to answer with confidence and clarity. But what if you could turn the tables and use every question to your advantage? By the end of this article, you’ll have the tools to answer any interview question with poise, using our unique strategy.
The Power of Reframing
One of the most powerful tools in your interview arsenal is the ability to reframe questions. Instead of seeing tricky questions as obstacles, see them as opportunities to showcase your unique strengths and problem-solving skills. Reframing allows you to pivot a question into a platform for highlighting what makes you the perfect candidate.
You can reframe anything!
When I was getting my undergraduate degree, I was taking journalism classes. We had to interview all sorts of people, and what’s always clear is that you can frame your answer in any context you like… The question is, can you frame your answer in a way that the interviewer likes? Reframing is a skill that you can practice and hone, and it will serve you well in any interview setting.
For this, you want to be prepared with your “Talking Points”.
Talking Points are key points or accomplishments that you want to highlight in your interview. They should align with the job requirements and reflect your unique strengths and experiences. Before your interview, take some time to identify these Talking Points and think about how you can reframe them into different types of questions.
Here’s an example: Let’s say you’re asked a common question like “What is your greatest weakness?” Instead of seeing this as a trap, use it as an opportunity to showcase your self-awareness and ability to improve. You could reframe your answer by saying something like:
“I used to struggle with time management, but I have since implemented techniques such as prioritizing tasks and creating a schedule to improve my efficiency and productivity. This experience has taught me the importance of continuous self-improvement and adapting to new challenges.”
Not only does this answer show your ability to address a weakness, but it also highlights your drive for personal growth and adaptability – two highly valued qualities in any job candidate.
The Art of Storytelling
Once you’ve created your talking points, the next step is to weave them together into a compelling story. Storytelling is an effective way to engage your interviewer and make yourself memorable. Instead of simply listing off your experiences and achievements, you can use storytelling to illustrate how you’ve overcome challenges, learned from failures, and achieved success.
Introducing “The 3E Method”: Engage, Explain, Expand
The best way to weave a narrative is by using the 3E Method. This method involves engaging your interviewer, explaining your talking points, and expanding on them with personal anecdotes or examples.
When crafting your stories, remember to be authentic and genuine. Share real-life examples that demonstrate your skills, values, and personality.
- Engage: Start your response with a captivating opening. This could be an interesting fact, a surprising statistic, or a personal anecdote that relates to the question.
- Explain: Clearly and concisely address the question. Use specific examples to illustrate your points, drawing from your experiences.
- Expand: Offer additional insights or relate your answer back to the job or company. This demonstrates your enthusiasm and understanding of the role.
Example in Action:
When asked about a time I worked in a team, I used the 3E method to structure my response. I began by sharing a personal experience of being on a sports team and how it taught me the importance of communication and collaboration. Then, I explained how these skills translated into my professional life and gave an example of when I successfully led a cross-functional team to complete a project on short notice. Finally, I expanded by discussing the company’s emphasis on teamwork and how my past experiences align with their values.
Authenticity and Honesty
While it’s important to put your best foot forward, authenticity and honesty should never be compromised. If faced with a challenging question, acknowledge it, and answer truthfully. Navigating tough questions with integrity reflects well on your character.
Final Thoughts
Interviews are as much about discovering if the company is right for you as they are about selling yourself. By reframing questions, weaving compelling stories, and preparing meticulously, you can transform the interview process from daunting to exhilarating. Remember, every question is an opportunity to shine.
