When I was getting my undergraduate degree, I was taking journalism classes. We had to interview all sorts of people, and what’s always clear is that you can frame your answer in any context you like… The question is, can you frame your answer in a way that the interviewer likes? Reframing is a skill that you can practice and hone, and it will serve you well in any interview setting.

For this, you want to be prepared with your “Talking Points”.

Talking Points are key points or accomplishments that you want to highlight in your interview. They should align with the job requirements and reflect your unique strengths and experiences. Before your interview, take some time to identify these Talking Points and think about how you can reframe them into different types of questions.

Here’s an example: Let’s say you’re asked a common question like “What is your greatest weakness?” Instead of seeing this as a trap, use it as an opportunity to showcase your self-awareness and ability to improve. You could reframe your answer by saying something like:

“I used to struggle with time management, but I have since implemented techniques such as prioritizing tasks and creating a schedule to improve my efficiency and productivity. This experience has taught me the importance of continuous self-improvement and adapting to new challenges.”

Then, I explained how these skills translated into my professional life and gave an example of when I successfully led a cross-functional team to complete a project on short notice. Finally, I expanded by discussing the company’s emphasis on teamwork and how my past experiences align with their values.

While it’s important to put your best foot forward, authenticity and honesty should never be compromised. If faced with a challenging question, acknowledge it, and answer truthfully. Navigating tough questions with integrity reflects well on your character.
