Anthropic just released a tool that helped knock a trillion dollars off tech stocks, and it’s been going viral on YouTube, Reddit, and Discord. It’s called Claude Cowork - an AI agent, but unlike a Notion agent or a ChatGPT agent, this one lives on your desktop and can do a staggering amount. If you’re wondering what it is, who it’s for, and what it can actually do, let’s get into it.
What Claude Cowork Is
Cowork is an AI agent with access to your desktop - the files and folders you choose to give it. It can run automated tasks on a schedule or independently, without you watching over it. To use it, you need three things: the desktop app, a paid subscription, and an active internet connection. It used to be Mac-only but now works on Windows too.
Pricing
Pricing is $20 a month (or $17 on an annual plan). If you want more tokens, faster speeds, and more access, the Max plan is $100. For teams, Claude Team is $20 per seat and the premium tier is $100. Whichever you pick, Cowork is included in the paid plans.
A One-Off Project: Files Into a Presentation
The Claude app has three sections - Chat, Code, and Cowork. Inside Cowork you can use connectors (Gmail, HubSpot, and many more) or just point it at your own folders. For a simple test, I connected Claude to a folder with Excel files, website data, presentations, and a summary report, then told it to build a PowerPoint from those files. It asked a couple of follow-up questions, showed a progress bar of the steps it planned to take, and critiqued its own work as it went. The finished deck pulled everything from those Excel and Word files with almost no direction from me. You can even kick this off from your phone - tell Claude to build the presentation before you get home.
Where It Gets Powerful: Scheduling
The one-off is neat, but the real leverage is automation. Once you’ve set up a task, you can schedule it - say, every Monday at 9 a.m. - so as the week progresses you upload fresh data and a dashboard builds itself automatically. I already have a daily email briefing running, connected to my Gmail, that summarizes my inbox by importance and drafts responses. You can have Cowork reference a specific folder every run, and it notifies you when the job is done.
Connectors and Daily Briefings
There are a lot of connectors - Notion (“give me a list of my open tasks every Monday”), Slack summaries, project management tools, presentation makers, mind mapping, and more. I set up a daily Gmail briefing that summarizes my emails by priority and drafts replies, scheduled for 9 a.m. daily. When it runs, Claude autonomously references my connectors, tells me what needs action and what doesn’t, and sends a notification when it’s finished. Depending on how much automation you want in your life, you can run a huge amount of your routine work through Cowork.
It’s a genuinely powerful tool with a lot of possibilities. One of the connectors is Gamma - if you’re interested in AI presentations, check out my Gamma walkthrough above.
